Food For Thought

"What I love about cooking is that after a hard day, there is something comforting about the fact that if you melt butter and add flour and then hot stock, it will get thick!  It's a sure thing.  It's a sure thing in a world where nothing is sure: it has a mathematical certainty in a world where those of us who long for some kind of certainty are forced to settle for crossword puzzles."

Nora Ephron

  2. Cooking is something I do without really thinking so it is a mind clearer most of the time for me.

  3. Now I want something with gravy, lots of it. I've been really trying to cook more this month as it seems the one place in my life I have some semblance of control.

I just had a poached egg on toast, and that sauce would have been delicious on it! Mari - I just made 5 loafs of banana bread this afternoon - and my house still smells soo good! Hug, Barb

  10. I could say the same thing for a 3pm alarm on my phone. It's usually a reminder to pull a bottle of red from the fridge and set it on the counter so it can gradually come up to its proper temperature for dinner.

    1. Exactly. That is why I started cooking after leaving home at 18 and moving 1200 miles away. I missed the food.

  12. The Nora Ephron quote is incredibly relatable because there is something grounding about the "math" of a good roux, especially when everything else feels chaotic.

I just shared a new travel post that you are invited to read at www.melodyjacob.com.

  14. it sounds like a poem. I remember reading many recipes that start with the instructions to make a roux. When I finally figured out how to make one, the success and aroma was almost emotional for me.

    1. It does. A lot of cooking is a science and so it is fascinating sometimes to see what can happen if you add just a few ingredients together and they bring the best out of each other.
