26 New To Me Recipes in 2026 # 5 and #6 -Sauces

I love cooking with a lot of spices and I love a glaze or sauce.  A good sauce can be utilized in so many different ways and really give a basic meal a nice kick.

At the end of March, we met my brother and his family at Fridays to spend some time together and catch up.  We haven't been to a Friday's since we lived in Florida, and it was TGI Fridays back then.   I ordered the chicken sandwich with whiskey sauce and as soon as I started eating, I remembered that sauce very well.  As I ate, I was thinking about all of the different things this sauce would be delicious on.  Chicken, fish, salmon, burgers...so many uses.  I looked up copycat recipes and landed on this one and it does not disappoint.

Friday's Whiskey Glaze

2 cups brown sugar
1 cup pineapple juice
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup Jack Daniel's whiskey
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon garlic granulated or powder
1 teaspoon onion granulated or powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons cornstarch

In a medium saucepan, combine all of the ingredients except for the cornstarch.  Heat and whisk over medium heat until the mixture is reduced by a third and coats the back of a spoon.  It took about 20 minutes.
Whisk together the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and then whisk into the glaze.  Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
Once cooled, refrigerate for at least one hour and it will continue to thicken.

I've made this twice in the last month and we've enjoyed it on a variety of meats.

In early April we had lunch at Drakes which we enjoy two or three times a year.  I love their burgers but once I tried their club sandwich a few years ago, I was hooked.  They use a wheat berry bread perfectly toasted and are very generous with the meats, cheese, lettuce and tomato.  Another thing that really puts it over the top is their honey mustard sauce.  It is delicious so again I searched for a good copycat recipe and landed on this one.

Drakes Honey Mustard Sauce

1/2 cup mayo (you can also use sour cream or yogurt, but I used mayo)
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
pinch of paprika

Place in a jar with a lid and shake it all up.  Refrigerate for at least an hour to let it all combine well.

This is good on a salad, sandwiches, chicken strips, fries and probably a lot more.

I don't know how we are already at the April, but here we are.  I hope everyone had a lovely month and that May is even better.

Do you have a favorite sauce??  Inquiring minds would like to know.

  3. These both sound so good. I'm not sure if this qualifies as a sauce but when I make things like egg roll in a bowl, or fiesta chicken, I like to make a crema. Erica taught me this. Add lime juice to sour cream and wow that will really kick up the fiesta chicken, or white chicken chili if that's what you're having. Then for a hotter take on it, add sriracha sauce to the sour cream. This is just fabulous. Lately I've been on a cole slaw kick where I add Granny Smith apples and sliced almonds. Then I make a dressing of Duke's mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, salt, pepper, and Splenda. I blend it with my immersion blender and wow all I will say is, that's a lively and delicious dressing for cole slaw! xoxo 🏴‍☠️

    1. I consider crema a sauce. I've made that before and it really does give a nice kick. I think that is why I love sauces so much, they just really add a bit of extra to a dish. Your coleslaw sauce is really close to mine. And you must use Dukes. It is the best.

  4. Both sounds good - I don't have the Jack Daniels but do have Southern Comfort. That has a citrus like taste - wonder how that might work?
I have everything to make the mustard sauce.
    Thanks!

    1. The recipe did say you could use any other whiskey so I'm sure it would turn out great.
I love that both sauces work so well on so many other things.

  5. Both of these sound good. I love that there are copycat recipe sites so you can enjoy the things you get in restaurants right at home. I didn't realize they dropped the TGIF

    1. I love searching for copycat recipes too. I didn't know they had dropped the TGI either and apparently there are very few of them still around.

  6. Those look really good. I'm not really a sauce person but I do like to occasionally dip chicken in honey mustard. Store bought though which is probably not nearly as good!

  8. Both sound delicious. At a dinner last month, I learned their house dressing is honey, mustard, and balsamic vinegar. I'd have never thought of that combo, but it's delicious as a marinade or cooking sauce too as I've used several times.

  9. I am definitely going to try this whiskey glaze. I’m like you, I like a lot of seasoning and flavor in food, and I do love sauces and glazes. There used to be a Friday’s close to my house, close enough, in fact that I could walk to it, but unfortunately, it closed down a number of months ago.

    1. My brother said the one we went to is the only one left in Illinois. I guess a lot of them are closing. It's funny how I hadn't thought about the glaze in 20 years or more but remembered it the minute I tasted it. It is so good on so many things. Especially chicken or salmon.

  10. I need to try both, but I have no idea what I'll put them on.

    1. I have personally tried the whisky glaze on beef, chicken and salmon and it was equally delicious on all of them. The honey mustard is a great dip for a sandwich, a burger, chicken, salad fries and asparagus. I'm sure a lot of others too that I haven't tried yet.

  11. This post reminds me of when my husband and I are dating and we used to go to The Ground Round on Friday nights for Happy Hour and get their chicken fingers with dipping sauce. We LOVED that sauce and finally asked the server what was in it. Well, the sum total was BBQ sauce mixed with mayo. LOL! Who knew? I still make it occasionally.
