My Weekly W's

Happy August!!  We had a huge cool down that has brought zero humidity and lows in the 50's.  It has been beautiful weather.  Summer weather comes back late next week but that's ok, at least we had a really nice break.

What's top of my mind:  Slowing down.  At home, I'm pretty good with this but work is a bit of a challenge.  Between the cell phone ringing or text messages coming in and then the email, office phone and the dreaded messages that anyone can pop up on my computer at any time it can get a bit frustrating.  This was a really good reminder to see.

Where I've been:  TBG and I went out for a weekday lunch which is always a treat.  Stopped by the farmer's market which is hopping with so much local goodness this time of year. That's about it except for regular errands.

Where I'm going:  Today we have a birthday party to go to, TBG gets his stitches removed Wednesday and other than that no solid commitments.  That is always a good thing in my mind.

What I'm watching:  Tuesday I went in to work and had to leave at 6:15 am to go to the other hospital and this is what I saw when I walked out the back door.  It was so beautiful the picture doesn't really do it justice.

What I'm reading:  Dirty Life A Memoir of Farming, Food and Love by Kristin Kimball.  I started it yesterday and really am enjoying it.  Her style of writing really pulls you in.

What I'm listening to:  This morning when I got up at 5:30 I opened up all of the windows to get the fresh morning air and the birds were all singing away.  The house was totally quiet except for them and it was a really great way to start my day.

What I'm eating:
BLT with zucchini fries
BBQ chicken with smashed garlic potatoes and coleslaw
Chicken sausage, tons of veggies over pasta with a small salad.  Peppers of every kind, onions and garlic smell so good when they're cooking.

BIG salad x 2
Nachos

Yesterday I made a big jar of Bread-and-Butter pickles from my grandmothers' recipe.  They were always my favorite.

Who needs a good slap:  K the cashier at Kroger.  For many years I have ignored this womans rude, miserable, bossy attitude but Wednesday I finally couldn't stay quiet.  There was a woman probably in her 80's in front of me with a cart full of groceries.  K visibly was very annoyed that she was taking a while to unload all of her groceries.  The look of distain was all over her face and it wasn't lost on the woman.  She looked at me an apologized and I told her to take her time I was in no hurry.  Then she told me she is getting too old for all of this.  K then started scanning the woman's coupons and harshly told the bagger to find this, and then this from the 20 plus bags that were in the cart making the woman feel even worse.  When all was said and done I planned to keep quiet but she hit a nerve. She told me I didn't need to have both packages of water on the belt and to take one off.  I told her no, just slide it down to the bagger.  She huffed and puffed 'and said why are you cranky.  That's when I told her I was horrified by the way she treated the woman and the bagger and let her know she was rude.  She disagreed and so I told her she may not mean it, she may not realize it but yes, she is rude and makes people feel bad for disturbing her. Funny thing is the next day I was telling a friend at work and she asked if it was the 50 ish woman with long stringy hair and glasses and I said YES. She agreed and said she's been like that for years and I don't know why they keep her.  I give her 5 slaps. I have no problem ignoring this kind of behavior but making that woman feel the way she did is just wrong.

Who needs a huge thank you: Ameran Illinois.  Last Sunday during the severe heat warning we heard a loud boom and the power went out.  My heart sank knowing that was a transformer.  I immediately called and notified them of the outage.  I was worried because I've heard horror stories that a new transformer can take days to weeks if they do not have any in storage.  Well, 3 hours later we had a new transformer and power.  We both went out back when it came on and thanked them and took them a drink.

Well, I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the weekend.  I'm off work tomorrow so I'm excited to not have to get up tomorrow morning at 4:30.

  1. I agree about not making the woman feel bad. Her job is to process the payment whether it takes a while or is very quick. Bad form!
    Enjoy the cooler days!

    1. The woman was at least in her 80's but she was fine. I've seen young people move that slow as well, no reason to get nasty with someone. We have enjoyed the cooler days. It will be back in the 90's by Friday but at least the humidity is supposed to be a little better than the last few weeks.

  2. I can't stand rude people. That one picture reminded me I have a Japanese electric skillet collecting dust. I miss sauteeing veggies along with sliced sausage in it. I'll be off to Temecula Valley in a few, both to pick up wine and escape the humidity.

    1. I can't either, especially when it comes to older people. Sauteed veggies are just so tasty, and they smell wonderful while you're cooking them. Enjoy your trip!!

  3. Oh my word, that cashier sounds horrible. I never could understand how a person like that doesn't get fired. She needs a lesson in customer service.
I love bread and butter pickles. I could probably sit and eat a whole jar in one sitting

    1. I have no idea how she has not been fired but she is still there.
Bread and butter pickles are my favorite. They're good for the gut too.

  4. I'm shocked she works there still because I'm thinking, she's been written up more than once. Unless no one goes to the manager. I dunno.

Is it Teams at your job. That instant message that pops up? I had to shut mine down back during my last job. Too much noise. Then I'd check it when I could.

    1. I don't know either.
Yes, it is Teams, and it is SO annoying. There are entirely too many ways to contact people now at work.

    2. Yeah, that's the one. I even went on my desktop at work and set it so Teams didn't auto start with computer start up. And had to silence some groups because they never shut up. Then I'd check it when I could. None of this right now business. Pass.

  5. I'd probably say "you get paid by the customer rather than the hour"? Anonymity online has bred terrible rudeness in our current culture. It's awful.

    1. Very true. This woman has been this way for years. I don't know if she even truly realizes it.

  7. Well done to you for letting that woman have it. I don't suppose it will make a jot of difference but you definitely did the right thing!

  8. Good for you for speaking up to that cashier, but doesn't sound like she's ever going to realize she is the problem. Maybe a complaint to the store manager would be a good idea. I hate seeing the elderly treated like that. I totally understand the bombardment of messages at work - emails, texts, and Teams all happening at the same time. I swear, as soon as I get up to go to the bathroom my phone rings.

  9. Thanks. From what I've heard and seen myself, she has been this way for years. I hate seeing the elderly treated like that too that's why I was so mad.
It never fails when I start doing payroll of incentives that I really concentrate on everything is going off with messages and it's so annoying. Hope you're doing well; I miss reading your blog.

  12. Good for you Lori, I have done the same thing to nasty clerks, especially if they abuse the elderly. Kay

  13. I really like the meme - so true.
Good for you for telling the cashier what a butt she was. I bet the bagger was secretly smiling too! There is no excuse to treat people like that. I would have went to the manager as well, had it been me.

    1. The meme says it all doesn't it?
The bagger was smiling and I think a little shocked because I'm usually so quiet. But the way she treated that woman was wrong.

  15. Hi Lori, I am 68 and retired, and I have worked in the retail sector for more than 17 years, more than half of that as a manager. Customer service is very important and a clerk or anyone in this field should be polite, friendly and respectful. It is great that you spoke up. Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada ❤️ 🇨🇦

    1. Hello. I honestly do not run in to many rude people here which is nice. Seeing how she made that woman feel just hit me and I couldn't be quiet. Thank you for stopping by.

  16. I guess she wasn't happy with her job or her life in general. That sunrise was gorgeous.

  17. I am so glad you said something!!! And it's clear that you are not alone in your disdain for this cashier. There are two grocery stores I frequent, and I have two friends that I will text when I get the cashiers we dislike, just to tell them what happened! We know their names and they've worked there for years. Crabby and we try to avoid their aisle, but sometimes it can't be helped. BUT, there are also cashiers the three of us love, so it's not all negative :)

    1. This is the only rude one at this store. I honestly don't come across many rude people here. This one though, she has never not been rude and no I'm not alone in seeing it and I don't take it personally. That's funny that you all text to share horror stories.

  19. Oh gosh! Your story about the cashier is so similar to one we had at the grocery store I shopped at when my kids were younger. I never said anything to her but I did complain to the manager several times but nothing was ever done about it. Finally, the store closed and that was the end of her! The sunrise is gorgeous and yes, pictures never seem to do then justice!

  20. Good for you telling that cashier that you noticed her rudeness. I probably would have told the management too. That's an awful attitude. Love the sunset and your food looks really good. Glad you had a nice lunch with TBG!!

  21. Good for you for calling out that cashier’s rudeness! Customers are the reason she has her job. There’s no reason for her to be irate. Maybe she’s having a bad day, maybe not, but she needs to keep her nasty comments to herself.
