Weekly Wrap Up

Happy Sunday!  Aside from work, which is a real shit show, it was a pretty good week.  Then yesterday afternoon TBG said he felt like he caught something.  It started with a runny nose and eyes and just feeling tired.  He slept from around 4-6 and then got up for dinner.  He took about 4 bites of soup and went back to bed sleeping until 7 this morning.  I made bacon and waffles for breakfast and again he took a few bites then went back to bed with the chills and a little coughing.  I hope whatever it is passes soon and that I miraculously do not catch it.

Last night I made a batch of homemade cough drops.
1/4 cup of lemon juice
4 tablespoons of honey
6 slices of ginger
Warm all of this up for about 5 or 10 minutes.  Do not let it boil.  When it cools off a bit, remove the ginger and then spoon it into a silicone mold of small squares.  Let it cool in the mold for about 6 hours.  They work really well and last for a month or more in a glass jar.

So when did paint get outrageous?  I went and bought 1 gallon of paint to do the three doors in the garage.  I always buy Sherwyn Williams because it is really good paint that lasts a long time.  They were having a paint sale of 40% off so I figured I would get it now to have when Spring gets here so I can get it done.  Talk about sticker shock.

What we ate this week...
Lamb meatballs, rice, salad and naan.

BIG salad.  I turned the TV on last night and it went right to Seinfeld, and it was the Big Salad episode.  It always cracks me up.
Basil pesto pasta, chicken sausage sauteed with peppers and onions and a salad
Fried chicken sandwich with sweet potato 'fries'
Lamb chops, baked potato and asparagus
I am making another big pot of chicken soup later this morning because it seems like we are going to need it. I'm going to double up on the ginger and garlic to chase this stuff away hopefully.
I have chicken legs that I wanted to cook tonight for dinner, but we'll see how things go.

Well, that's all I have for now.  Enjoy the week ahead and stay well!!

  1. I hope TBG gets better soon and you don't catch whatever it is! I envy anyone that can sleep a lot when they are sick. I absolutely cannot sleep when I don't feel good! The price of paint was crazy when we were painting our house two years ago! Even more so now apparently! Stay well!

    1. Thank you, he is a bit better and I am clear so far. As long as my nose isn't all stuffed up, I can sleep through anything and apparently, he can too. He really slept a lot in 48 hours. Yes paint is crazy now, but I guess everything is really.

  2. I'm dreading some home improvement costs. I too have a door to paint and pretty much every room in the house. I hope TBG recovers soon. I feel so bad for him and others getting this horrible whatever it is this winter.

    1. I remember we had a new garage door installed in 2021 and when they came back a year later for a check on it, they said be glad we bought that when we did because the price literally doubled.

  3. Sorry about the crummy week at work! And then the sickness at home. Hope you don't catch it. My kids and grands have all been sick too. So far we are ok.
The homemade cough drops sounds really healthy and effective!

    1. It is a challenge sometimes seeing what corporate has done to a previously locally owned hospital, but what can you do. A lot of people have been sick around here too. He is feeling better and I am good so far.

  4. Paint got expensive due to the much increased costs of the raw materials. At least you got the same discount as employees :)

    1. I really shouldn't have been so shocked I mean what hasn't gone up over the last 5 years? Everything has doubled or tripled. I'm glad I did catch the sale.

  5. Hoping TBG gets to feeling better quickly. I am sure nurse Lori will take good care of him. Hope you don't get it. REST and liquids the best things.
Paint has been very expensive for a long time. I bought a good gallon 2 summers ago for projects and about fell over at the price.
Have a good and healthy week.

OMG on the paint price. And that's even with 40% off. Geez, I need to do some painting but with that kind of price I doubt I'll do it. For whatever reason I'm signed out of my google account and it won't let me back in.

  7. Hi Lori~ Holy Cow to the paint price!! I need to paint three rooms, so I guess I better go get a loan! I'm so sorry that TBG is sick, but it sounds like you are doing everything you can to ward it off. As always, I'm always inspired by your meals... And yes, I'm a big Seinfeld fan!! I loved that episode!

    1. Hi Barb. Holy cow is what I though too, especially with 40% off. TBG is feeling better and so far I am good. I aired out the house and I've been wiping everything off and keeping clothes and sheets washed so hopefully this bug will leave the house. I love it too. George was so descriptive when he said you didn't just get a salad, you had to have the BIG salad. Cracks me up.

  10. I need to make some cough bonbons too! Bought one small package of 72 grams for 2.75 euro...sugar free, etc. Better and cheaper to make my own.

  14. Wow Lori- I make a lot of homemade things but I never knew we could make cough drops. thanks for the recipe I love the idea. Sorry about your husband- hope he gets well quickly and you don't catch it. I think the prices of everything have gone up since Covid- it's crazy expensive out there. I love the Seinfeld show but not sure I saw that one. Have a good week and stay healthy.

    1. We like the cough drops and they do work well, quickly. He's feeling better and I seem to have escaped it. It is crazy expensive out there. Everything has doubled or tripled in price so I don't know why I was so shocked at the paint increase. I hope you're having a good week.

  15. Wow thank you for that cough drop recipe. Many years ago a friend told me to take a navet (round, white turnip), hollow out the middle and fill it with hardened sugar (they call it sucre candi here, sorry). Leave it overnight and drain off the juice. It's surprising pleasant and also works well.

  16. I knew paint had gone up, but wow! It was about $40 a gallon the last time I bought it. I thought that was high! I made chicken soup tonight. I've got some sniffles, and I'm supposed to start a new job on Monday!

I'm visiting from Afternoon Coffee and Evening Tea. Happy weekend! Laura

  18. I felt like I was coming down this past week as well, but I think my sinuses don’t appreciate rapid changes in weather. Fortunately, it never amounted to anything. I’m going to keep in mind your cough drop recipe. Generally I go to my standard liquid concoction of equal parts, honey, lemon, and gin. Don’t get me started on the price of paint. It is outrageous!

    1. I'm glad you didn't come down with anything. I felt a little off for a couple of days but nothing major and he has recovered. I really dislike the extreme weather changes we have around here. A 40 to 50 degree change in temps is brutal on the body. Yes, paint is crazy expensive.

  19. I hope the chicken soup did the trick and that you avoided catching whatever it turned out to be.
