My garden is done except for tomatoes, peppers and herbs. I had planted another round of basil in August not knowing if it would produce but with this weather it really has so I guess I can be happy about another batch of pesto for the freezer and more to dehydrate. I stopped at the farmers market yesterday and picked up more onions, concord grapes and 1/2 bushel of cured sweet potatoes for the winter. Other than my herbs, everything else is stocked for the winter. I will let the herbs go another week or two since the weather is so warm.
Last weekend was our local Fall Festival. TBG had a group of his students do a TKD demonstration and they all did a wonderful job. The weather was actually nice, and we enjoyed walking around and seeing some people that we hadn't seen for a while and had lunch with a few of them at our favorite Mexican restaurant El Rancherito. We didn't stay for the parade because it is always SO long.
Work has been busy. Next week is week four of orientations for the 5 new doctors. Usually, I enjoy getting to know the new doctors and spending the two or three days getting them orientated to the facility and our group but four weeks in a row is way past my limit and I honestly can't wait to be finished with it all.
A couple of weeks ago, TBG brought home the chrysanthemums that he always buys from the FFA group. Monday, I was in the kitchen, and something caught my eye. I saw something sticking out of one of them and I couldn't figure out what it was. I went to get a closer look, and I was not happy with what I saw.
Yes, that is a snake. In the 15 years we've lived in this house, we have never had a snake. I don't know if it was in the plant or if there was an egg in the soil and it hatched. It popped it's head up for quite a few minutes looking around and then it proceeded to crawl its way into the yard. Gotta love nature.
What we've been eating...
Bacon, egg and cheese croissant with a small fruit salad
Beef pot roast with potatoes and green beans. I shredded the remainder of roast and made beef and cheese roll ups for the freezer.
Taco egg rolls and rice. When I made these, I made enough to freeze and cooked the rest of the ground beef for cheeseburger egg rolls. They were also added to the freezer for lunches and dinners as well.
Chicken, pesto mac and cheese and a salad
Big salad with garlic cheese biscuits
Tonight we're having our last BLT of the season with zucchini fritters. All good things must come to end for a season.
We still haven't had our first bowl of chili or soup, stew yet. I'm hoping it cools off a bit more soon. Hope springs eternal.
I did watch a few good movies over the last couple of weeks.
The AI Documentary-Or How I Became an Apoctaloptimist on Netflix was really interesting and informative.
Junebug on Hallmark was a really cute movie.
The Fundamentals of Caring on Netflix. Another cute feel-good movie.
The second season of Best Medicine has started so I've watched the first two episodes and have enjoyed them. I think the small town in Maine and the residents of it are what I enjoy the most. Plus, Anne Potts. I've always liked her.
The new season of The British Bake Off also started and we've watched the first two episodes. It's too soon to have a favorite.
The local Persimmon season is upon us here and everyone is seeing spoons. Only time will tell what our winter will be like.
I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the Fall or Spring where you are.
Guess what? The Fall weather is here at my house! It's been quite cool and raining... Today I'm rejoicing in some sunshine. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm burning candles too. I love the ones with wood wicks.
Yikes on that snake!
4 weeks of orientation is a long time. I agree that it's really good to get to know people, but I was always glad to be done with it too.
I like Best Medicine too and have to start watching this season. I did start watching the latest British Bake Off. It's always good!
Enjoy your fall weather. I hope we at least get some along with rain. It's just so dry here.
DeleteThe orientation is only 3 days for each doctor but it's taking me 4 weeks to get all 5 new doctors done because of their start dates and that is a bit too much. At least this is the last week for hopefully a while.
I wish the summer would have stayed slightly longer over here...it feels very autumn over here.
ReplyDeleteI have been watching a lot of British series and films, but not a fan of any cooking show :-)
Enjoy the autumn. I watch a lot of British shows also and we do enjoy the British Baking Show. It can be a bit cheesy but it's fun to see what they create. This year Prue has retired, and Nigella Lawson is the other judge. I do have to admit the way she eats is a bit distracting.
DeleteIt's been really nice here lately with temps being in the 60's and 70's and lots of sunshine! My kind of weather! I have never heard of the persimmon seed forecast before! Fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're enjoying the weather. Yes, the persimmon seeds with the fork, spoon or knife is old folklore in this area and further south.
DeleteIt’s still in the 90’s here but the humidity is down so I am fine with the heat.
ReplyDeleteI used to know where some persimmon trees were but they are long gone so I can’t check a local trees fruit for a forecast.
I hope your work settles and the new docs all are quick learners
Yes, I guess I should be thankful that the humidity is down but I'm ready for cooler days.
DeleteI always look forward to hearing what the local persimmons predict. I need to remember to see if they were right this year.
We are definitely having Fall weather here, and rain. I can't believe you've never had a snake in your yard, but showing up in flowers is definitely unexpected and not what I'd be happy to see.
ReplyDeleteI hope we eventually get cooler days and rain too. Neither of us have ever seen a snake in our yard. I do plant a lot of mint and other plants that they don't care for so maybe that helps. When the snake stuck his body straight up out of the plant it was a bit of a shocker. I'm just glad I was in the house when I saw it happening.
DeleteI would jump right out of my skin if I found a snake in my plant pot!!! I know they'd slither away rather than fight but still - I'm just not used to them at all over here!
ReplyDeleteI am really glad I witnessed it from the inside of the house. I'm not sure how I would have felt if he decided to pop out while I was deheading the flowers or watering.
DeleteThe temps have been cooler here with a few warmer days thrown in. The days are definitely shorter.
ReplyDeleteBLT sounds so good.
Im not sure what a TKD demonstration is but way to go to the students for doing a good job with them.
Holy smokes on that snake. That would have freaked me out a bit
I will miss BLT's this winter but I had my share over the summer. TBG teaches Tae Kwon Do (TKD) so his students did the demonstration on forms and board breaking. They all did really well.
DeleteThe snake freaked me out and I was inside.
Pulling the last of my Basil today and will make more pesto for the freezer! Love, love basil! Not Bossy
ReplyDeleteI love basil and pesto also. I'm glad I'll get another large batch for the freezer. It brightens up a dish so well.
DeleteI have a basil plant with leaves that are as big as Spinach. The plant got lost in my tomatoes. I am ready for pesto season.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is big! Don't you just love it when surprises like that pop up in the garden?
DeleteThat snake would freak me out as much as the 106 weather we had yesterday. In comparison, I heard Phoenix was 96.
ReplyDelete106 is CRAZY!! I hope you're staying cool somehow. The snake freaked me out for sure.
DeleteOK, big no on snake - even a little one! Wonder if it came in the plant?
ReplyDeleteI still have tomatoes and peppers and little baby cukes - I will see how it goes. Have had a couple fall feeling days - but no color yet. I keep hearing warmer and drier in this area for at least first part of winter.
I do NOT like the early and late darkness - I so prefer daylight.
Enjoy your week.
It's funny because I thought of my gram when I saw the snake. She always had a huge strawberry patch and kept a long wooden stick out there to weave through the patch before she started to pick so the snakes would get out. (and at least two or three always slithered out) I was around 5 and I remember asking her if she was afraid of the snakes and she said she wasn't she just didn't like surprises.
DeleteWe have finally entered the fall season. We’ve also finally had rain, so there is hope. We used to have snakes, the harmless variety but not for at least 20 years. I would guess it’s the farm chemicals being used in abundance. You rollups sound good and have given me some inspiration. Lunch is not my favorite meal to come up with. I did make soup for lunch today.
ReplyDeleteWe really need the rain so I hope that comes soon. This was our first snake, and I am pretty sure it came with the plant from the FFA sale. I am constantly sticking leftovers and planned overs in the freezer for lunches. I take mine to work and TBG has his at home. Soup sounds so good but I'm holding out for cooler weather.
DeleteIt's still quite hot here of course; it doesn't really cool off until mid-October. I see the snake as a messenger from the spirit world; a sign of wisdom. (I hope that helps).
ReplyDeleteWell, I do hope you're correct on the snake.
DeleteA half bushel of sweet potatoes and everything else stocked for winter sounds very organised. I mostly read non-fiction, so the AI documentary caught my eye and I'll look for it. Hope the cooler weather and some rain arrive soon.
ReplyDeleteI try to stock up on local produce for the winter as much as I can. The AI documentary was interesting and informative. We do really need rain.
DeleteLove the wood wicks too. And that scent is one we'd grab for a good deal as well. Lots of fall here on the mountain. I can teleport you some cold breezes and falling leaves. Sat out with the pup many times so far. Sooo nice.
ReplyDeleteI love Potts too! Her and Dolly. And Betty. The whole lot of them. Brilliant ladies.
This candle's scent is pretty spot on. I had TBG smell without knowing what it was and he guessed right away. If you can send some of your cooler temps and rain our way I would really appreciate it.
DeleteSend you some cold now. I'm wrapped in a hoodie. Though ... yesterday we had an Indian Summer day.
Deletesounds like you have been busy! We have lots of snakes here in queensland, and we have beautiful carpet pythons! Haven't seen one for a while. Hope your october is a good one.
ReplyDeletecheers
sherry
I have been busy and as a reward to myself I am taking next week off work to recuperate. I've seen your photos of snakes, and I have to say I'm not a fan. I hope October is a good month for you as well.
DeleteWhere is the fall weather, indeed?! It used to be, come mid October, the trees would start to turn. Everything is as green around here as it was mid summer. It’s going up to 93° on Monday, but the Saturday after that, the low is supposed to be 37°, so perhaps cooler weather is on the way. I’m still watering plants outside. I put in fall lettuces and they’re doing quite well, and I have herbs, my citrus trees still out there, and leeks. I’m considering planting tulip bulbs to bloom in the spring, but I have no experience with that and I’m not quite sure if I should do it.
ReplyDeleteYou are having the same weather as us, only things aren't very green here because I honestly can't remember the last time we had rain. I had hope with the hurricane that we may get some, but it looks like that will be going East of us. I saw that next week a few days in the low 90's and then a cool off. I will gladly welcome it. I wish I could help with the tulips, but I've never planted them either. Have a wonderful weekend.
DeleteWell you must watch Remarkably Bright Creatures! It had me in tears at the end, haha! On Netflix. Hey it's still warm here too, but that's to be expected in South Carolina. But the humidity has eased off and the nights are cool. I would love a rainy day too, and some is predicted for tomorrow. We have had exactly one chilly day and I enjoyed it to the hilt!!!! Happy weekend, Lori! xoxo 🏴☠️
ReplyDeleteI started to watch that one day and then decided on something else, but I do plan to watch it soon. I hope it was happy tears at the end. The humidity has eased up here also and I really should be thankful for that. I hope you also have a lovely weekend! Big hugs!
DeleteOur weather has turned to fall . It's been in the 40's and 50's in the mornings. Of course by. noon its 70. I always enjoy knowing what you are watching to give me ideas. A snake? No way!! That would not make me happy...Have a great week Lori.
ReplyDeleteMonday and Tuesday is supposed to be 90 and then Wednesday brings a cool front and I can't wait. Yes, a snake. It did not make me happy either. Wishing you a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteOur weather is very fall-ish. The air is crisp and the leaves are starting to change. But mainly we have had rain, rain and more rain.
ReplyDeleteWe need rain SO bad. Hopefully the end of the week will actually bring some.
DeleteHello, my fellow fall-loving friend. I hope you are getting fall weather by now. We finally have some cooler weather here! And a snake?? No thank you!!! Have a cozy week ahead!
ReplyDeleteI love our local carpet pythons here. I don't mind a snake :) We are having so much rain, just before El Nino starts with the hottest dryest summer expected!
