What's top of my mind:  I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that it is August.  But I know it is because every year these beauties pop up out of the ground the first week.  Around here they call them paper lilies, but I've heard them called many other names.

Where I've been:  It was a pretty low-key week here and I didn't go anywhere outside of work.  There was a festival downtown that we considered going to but it was nice and comfy at home in the AC so we opted out.

Where I'm going:  Thursday morning we're going out early for a big breakfast so I can have a full stomach to get two back bottom teeth pulled at 8:30. I usually go by myself, but TBG offered to come with and I think knowing he's out in the waiting room will take a bit of the edge off.  I'm hoping so anyway.  Saturday if I'm feeling ok, we're going to take a quick day trip.

What I'm watching:  Not much at all.  I didn't really watch TV this week other than Master Chef and Secret Service.  The last will make you not want to eat in a restaurant ever again.

What I'm reading:  I'm still reading The Dirty Life and enjoying it.  I have her other book Good Husbandry waiting to read next.

What I'm eating:
BIG salad x2
Sloppy Joes and 'fries' my recipe is here Culinary Adventures with Lori: My Week
Chicken fajita bowls with cheese roll ups.  SO good.

BLTs with zucchini 'fries'
Steak for me, chicken wings for TBG, rosemary potatoes and coleslaw with garlic cheddar biscuits
Tonight, will be left over wings, slaw and tomatoes

Who needs a good slap:  Insurance companies again.  I'm sure everyone has wanted to slap them at least once or twice.  TBG has been on Entresto for his heart since November 2023 when his heart issues started.  Saturday, he called the pharmacy to reorder, and they told him insurance wasn't going to cover it anymore now that there is a generic substitute.  Well, his cardiologist does not like using generic for whatever reason, so his office is fighting with them.  Insurance companies arguing with physicians is crazy to me.  I'm just thankful that this is a minor issue with them and not some of the horror stories you hear about where they've denied surgeries and other procedures that will help someone live.

What is making me smile:  Being able to fill my cabinets and freezer with so many local veggies and herbs for the winter really does make me smile.  The 'ber months will be here before we know it and I'm stocking up all that I can to enjoy over the winter.

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoys the day!!

  1. I just love the lilies - we call them surprise lilies. Every time mine bloom it is like a hug from mom & dad - as they came from their house.
Good luck with the dentist - they are my phobia!
    Meals all sound delish.

    1. A friend told me they all call them naked ladies. There are so many names. Thank you, I'm not a fan of the dentist either but they have to come out so I'm just going to suck it up and get it done.

  3. How nice to get lilies! They are deer candy here. I’m sure you know this, but I’ve had good luck with GoodRx for my husband’s name brand med. it saves us 2/3 the insurance cost, which is so stupid.

    1. The lilies are behind our fence and the deer have a hard time getting to them. I do need to check out GoodRx for him. Thank you for the reminder.

  4. I hope you feel better soon. A tooth extraction is no picnic, but two? Ouch. I'm heading back to Temecula Valley for an overnight stay midweek. Part of it is writing related, and I see bison meatballs and a Malbec in my near future.

    1. Thank you. I'm not looking forward to having them pulled but I will be glad when it is over. Bison meatballs sound wonderful. Enjoy your trip.

  5. The lilies are so pretty. I hope your dentist appointment goes smoothly and those teeth just slide right out so that you can be on with the rest of your day.
That is crazy that an insurance company thinks they know better than a doctor.

    1. Thank you. A lot of insurance companies employ physicians to help with 'peer reviews' but that physician has not physically seen the pt.

    2. I bought a few Wednesday minis to shoot macro. OMG. So fun! The second part of the second part will be out soon too. Funny when they break them up like that.

  11. Dealing with insurance companies can be VERY frustrating!! So great that you are freezing local summer produce. I can't do it because we take off for Florida mid October and are in Florida until June. I have an apartment size refrigerator and freezer in Florida.

    1. Insurance companies do make everything so difficult that is for sure. At least in Florida you can get a good variety of local produce throughout the season while you are there.

  12. Around here, we call those surprise lilies. Like you, I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that it’s August, but my internal clock is ready for fall. Even though it’s near 100° this week I’m starting to embrace casseroles and pumpkin spice. I’m also growing weary of the deck garden. I have loved all of the fresh vegetables, but the cucumbers seem to be finished, and I’m distressed by that.

    1. I've heard them called surprise lilies here too. This year has just flown by for me and I try to live in the moment but can't seem to keep up.
I'm ready for Fall and all it has to offer like the comfort food and cooler temps but will miss the fresh veggies and herbs.

  13. Hope your teeth went well. Scary indeed about American insurance companies when it comes to health issues.

    1. Thank you. It went as well as it could I suppose. Yes, insurance is becoming quite the joke here. We pay a lot for it but then they don't want to pay for anything. As of yesterday, the doctor is still fighting to have him stay on the medication he wants him on.
