My Week

This was the longest work week in recent memory.  Between the time change and the return of super cold, windy weather, I was exhausted.  Now of course the weekend is flying by as they usually do.  It's snowing right now but the temps are supposed to go up each day so hopefully I will get my mojo back.

I went to get my hair cut this week and had him take three inches off of the length so I'm set for a few months.  My seed orders both came in so I'm in planning mode.  I decided to not grow the things I can always get at the farmers market like tomatoes, bell peppers, onions and grow the more difficult things to find like poblanos, radishes, lettuce, etc.  I'm widening my herb garden this year also so I'm busy making a list of ideas and things to pick up.  I'll be starting some seeds this weekend to get ready for Spring.  Bakers Creek included a free packet of seeds for Japanese Wasabi Radish.  Can't wait to try that.

Meals this week:

Lambchops, baked potato and asparagus
Pasta bake, salad and garlic knots
BIG salad
Beef tacos-we haven't had them in a LONG time and they really hit the spot.

Chicken, white bean spicy soup
Chicken breast strips, mashed potatoes and salad

Yesterday I made a pie crust so in a bit I'll pull that out of the fridge and make an apple pie.  I actually remembered to add ice cream to my pickup this week so we can have it ala mode.  I'm trying a new to me apple recipe from The Joy of Cooking.  It's only a bit different from the one I usually use so I'm pretty confident it will be delicious.

I caught up on just a bit of world news on Aljerezza and wow, there are so many that deserve a slap or five that I just can't choose one.  The US and the world as a whole is getting scarier by the day.  No more news for me for a week at least.  It's just draining.

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring and I'm hoping it starts to feel a bit more like it.  I know we'll have a few more cold days but I hope they are few and far between.

What is happening with you?

  2. The weather always has an affect on me too- I love the idea not to plant what you can get at the farmers market. Hope spring and warmer temperatures come soon for you.

    1. I enjoy Winter but by mid March I am ready for Spring. I love growing tomatoes but am always fighting the squirrels and groundhogs, so I figured it was best left to someone else.

  3. Yes, the world is getting scarier by the day! We had a ton of snow last week now we just have cold, although it's supposed to be in the mid 50's all next week. Not exactly warm but it's a start! I hope you have an easier week!

    1. It really seems like it is. By mid March I'm just over the cold weather. The mid 50's sound good to me. I hope you enjoy your week.

  4. Lovely seeds! There is nothing so exciting as the arrival of the garden seeds!

  5. We were having almost early summer temps when things changed drastically. It is cold now and I am not a happy camper.
We are rethinking our plantings also. I have huge successes with green beans and peppers, but our resident groundhog ate the beans before they were mature enough to pick. He seems to dislike bell peppers so I am planting a lot of them.
I have quit watching the news and only read it. It is much easier to tolerate that way.

    1. It was a drastic change here also. It got up in the 70's and then BAM teens at night and 20-30 during the day for 4 days. We have a resident groundhog also and he has a taste for Jalapeno peppers. I've never had anything eat them before. I usually don't watch the news and will start reading it only. It's just depressing isn't it?

  6. It’s fun to try new things in the garden. We tried eggplant for the first time last year and loved it. Didn’t get many, but it was still fun. Green beans, tomatoes and cucumbers are truly the only plants that prosper for us.

    1. I do enjoy trying new things in the garden. I did baby bok choy last year for the first time and it did pretty well. I haven't tried eggplant even though I love it. Maybe next year.

  7. That spring ahead really messes me up. We got more snow here too.
All the food sounds so good. You're making me hungry. I haven't had tacos in a very long time.
I would love to grow a garden but I don't want to do all the work.

    1. For some reason, it really messed me up this year even more than usual. We hadn't had tacos in a long time either and they really hit the spot. I love gardening but it does add a bit of work to your day that is for sure.

  8. My son also listens to Al-Jazeera as he says it's important to not just have the western media spin on everything! And he's right of course!!! And oh those seeds look wonderful. I remember Jeremy Clarkson on Clarkson's Farm (highly recommend it) being thrilled to be able to grow wasabi! I've currently got fresh ginger soaking to see if I can grow it myself. Given that we're not exactly a tropical climate here I'll have to keep it in my little greenhouse if it does sprout. The excitement is killing me!

    1. Other than the local news for the weather, it's about the only one I listen to. Thanks for the recommendation, I will be sure to check it out. These are wasabi radishes. I can't wait to see what they taste like. I would love to be able to grow ginger. Keep me posted on how it works out.

  9. I'm so tired I woke up exhausted. The last three mornings, I spent a cumulative six hours clearing out the weeds on the property. I'm glad it's all done but my body is begging for a day off from everything.

Yeah, the news is quite icky right now and it's only going to get worse. Hang in there.

    1. Wow you are really battling those weeks. Is it all the rain you've had making them go crazy? I hope you take today and tomorrow off and just rest. Yes, things are not looking well. Take care of yourself my friend!

  11. Hello! Getting a hair trim always makes me feel good! And your menu looks great! I am doing chicken tenders tonight with sweet potatoes for me, and egg noodles for everyone else. Have a great day, and happy spring!

  12. Happy first day of Spring my friend! I'm so jealous of all your seeds. I'm putting planting on the back burner this year - at least until I move. I had to chuckle at how they labeled the Coriander, Indian. Growing up, I only knew the Indian/Hindi names of some herbs & spices, because that's what we were taught. To be honest, I never knew the name Coriander (Dhania) until I was an adult...shhh :) I'm so happy to see Marigolds too. I plant them every year. He we go again with having the same taste in things :) Wishing you & the big guy a wonderful week. Enjoy your lovely temps.

    1. Happy first day of Spring to you!! Apparently there is coriander and then there is Indian coriander according to the packet. Coriander is coriander to me but apparently this one is a bit different. I'm anxious to see how. I always plant Marigolds. I think they are so pretty and they do keep a lot of pests away. It does seem we are constantly finding things out about each other and saying 'me too'! lol Wishing you a great week also!
