52 Recipes in 52 Weeks #5 Indian Spiced Chili

One of my projects for 2024 is to try one new recipe each week for the year.  These will be chosen from all of the flagged pages in cookbooks that I have or from the file of 'need to try' recipes.  I will try new desserts, main dishes, side dishes and breads.

I found this new to me recipe on the blog https://adayinthelifeonthefarm.blogspot.com/  Indian Spiced Chili

Ingredients:
2 T. Olive Oil
1 Vidalia onion, diced
4 mini sweet peppers, seeded and diced.  She used a combination of red, orange and yellow.  I used orange and green bell peppers that I had on hand.
6 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeno, seeded and diced
1 T. garam masala
1 T. sweet paprika
salt and pepper to taste
1 lb. lean ground beef
2 (15 oz.) cans diced tomatoes with juices
1 T. brown sugar
1 (15 oz.) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15 oz.) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15 oz.) can sweet corn, drained (I did not use this as we no longer eat corn)
sour cream and shredded cheese for serving if desired

Instructions:
Heat the oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.  Add the onion, season with salt and pepper, and cook for a minute or two, until fragrant and translucent.

Add the peppers, garlic and jalapeno and continue to cook until onions turn golden, another few minutes.

Stir in the garam masala and paprika, coating the vegetable and then add the ground beef to the pot.

Cook and stir, breaking down the beef until browned.  Stir in the tomatoes with their juices and the brown sugar, cook for another few minutes.

Add the beans, corn (if using), mix well, and bring to a boil.  Reduce heat to a simmer, cover and cook for about 30 minutes.

Serve with sour cream and shredded cheese, if desired.

We both LOVE chili of various kinds so I was really looking forward to making this when I found the recipe.  It was a very cold weekend so a perfect opportunity to try it.  We both really enjoyed it.  TBG talked about it quite a few times and remarked that he is happy there are two large bowls left for two more dinners.  There is a lot of flavor in the dish and it had that warming spice feeling like Indian food does.

I highly suggest trying this chili while we are still in winter.  It really is GOOD!!

  1. I know I would like this, but TheHub does not like Indian flavors at all. I might have to make a small batch just for me.

    1. I say half the recipe and try it. That would give you three good size bowls for yourself.

  2. My husband can’t do any spice at all due to an esophagus issue, so the only chili I can make is a sweet Hawaiian chili that has pineapple in it. Yeah to finding a good new recipe!

    1. I'm glad you've found a chili recipe that he can enjoy too. It's hard when there are foods one can't eat. A sweet Hawaiian chili sounds good. It is fun to find new recipes that turn out well.

    1. Lamb instead of beef would be delicious!! Now I want to try that too.

    2. And lamb instead of beef would make it Hindu-friendly as well. I use lamb or venison when making this for my son in law.

    1. I wouldn't say it is spicy but it is very flavorful. I was actually worried I wouldn't like it because I usually spice up my chili.

  7. We used to enjoy a big bowl of chili in the winter- haven't made it in Florida yet. I do love the spices in this version and the two kinds of beans with black beans probably being my favorite. I'll hold on to the recipe. Thanks.

    1. When we lived in Florida we didn't eat many chili's, soups or stew either. Being back in the Midwest calls for them.

  8. That looks and sounds soooo good right now! I think the last time I made chili was before the pandemic.

  9. I do love me some beans! I had to laugh at seeing jalapeno here tho :) Just wondering why you no longer eat corn? Does it disagree with you?

    1. I had to see a specialist years ago because I was having stomach issues. It took an elimination diet over two month to find out I can only eat non GMO corn which is hard to find here in the US. 90% of the corn grown here is GMO and sprayed with glyphosate which really does a number on my stomach. That is one reason I started making my own bread too. So much of the flour used here in the us is bromated flour which I also have to avoid.

  10. This is very much like my mom's chili recipe, which I really love ... except for the garam masala. What an interesting addition! I've got to try that! I do like to add a bit of cinnamon to my chili (which is something my mom would never have done), and I'll bet that the garam masala is a bit like that.

    1. The recipe is pretty much like the one I use other than the spice profile.
I make mine with cumin, smoked paprika, smoked chipotle. I honestly didn't know if we would like it but we really did. The garam masala gives it a wonderful flavor and we didn't miss the heat because it had that warm spice flavor.
