My Weekly W's

What's top of my mind:  My new title and responsibilities at worked started Monday.  I have a lot of support from all of the doctors, NP's and the department Director so I'm hopeful that this will be a positive change for me and the department as a whole.  I did make it clear that I was nonnegotiable on the 40-hour work week and everyone agreed.  I will hold them to that.

Where I've been:  Other than home and work, I went to the Farmers Market Friday.  This time of year the tables are filled with gorgeous fruits and veggies.  We got our meat bundle on Saturday, so we won't need to buy meat for months other than a turkey for Thanksgiving.

Where I'm going:  So far, no plans.  Work will be fun since two of our previous doctors are coming to work the week. It almost feels like the team is whole again even if temporary.  It will also be a bit of a brutal week because my calendar is full of teams meetings.  We will someone how get a few lunches in together though.

What I'm watching:  I watched a few episodes of Dinners, Drive Ins and Dives while cooking this week.  One place was making Bison burger burritos so you know that is something I will be trying soon.  I also watched a couple of movies but they have escaped my memory so obviously they weren't watch worthy.

What I'm reading:  Where I Come From, by Aaron Sanchez.  Gordon Ramsay wrote "This book is a testament to family and the mentors that shape a young cook into a passionate, innovative, and ruthless chef.  Aaron's journey is an absolute page-turner, with gritty stories and hilarious anecdotes that make you understand the man behind the restaurants and TV shows".  I've seen him on a number of shows and he really stood out to me when he was a judge on Master Chef.  He was a wonderful example of a compassionate and knowledgeable teacher.  I'm enjoying learning about his journey.

What I'm eating:
Fried chicken sandwich and oven chips

BIG salad x2
Meatloaf, smashed garlic potatoes and salad
Calzones made with LO meatloaf, onions, peppers and cheese with salad
Wings, steak, zucchini "fries", tomatoes with basil and Texas toast

Who needs a good slap:  Staying away from the dreaded news really does make it hard to figure out who needs a good slap.

What I'm planning:  More dehydrating.  Yesterday I did a batch of Thai Basil but there are still so many batches of summer freshness to dehydrate for the Fall and Winter.

What's making me smile:  I watched a news story this morning about an 89-year-old man in Galveston Indiana.  He has been the grave digger there for 70 years.  He is known by everyone there for his kindness to everyone.  They recently threw him a surprise party to acknowledge him and everything he's done for the town.  The last part really hit home when one of the resident's said Allen has figured out what is enough.  That really hit home.  Thank you, Allen, for reminding me that I truly do have enough.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week!!

    1. He does all kinds of odd jobs for the city and residents and when they ask how much he says I'll send you the bill, but never does. A heart of gold.

  3. I always enjoyed Sanchez on the Food Network. He seems like a nice fellow. Our big salad tonight will feature chicken, strawberries, cucumbers, feta, and roasted pecans.

    1. That was always the impression I got of him seeing him on TV and now reading the book, I realize how true it is. Your Sunday salads always sound so delicious.

  4. If you slapped all the people who need it
    you'd get nothing else done!
    Stupidity abounds.
Good luck on your new position.

    1. Thank you. It does seem the world has gone mad. That's why I'm just trying to shut it out a bit.

    1. Thank you Jeanette. You do see a lot of nice houses so I can imagine it's challenging not wanting some things for yourself.

  8. Interesting to read about Mr. Ramsey. A few weeks ago I heard a podcast on the fellow that was most damning.
I too hope you do well in your new post!
I am mad-jealous about the farmers market.

    1. The book is about Aaron Sanchez, the review was from Gordon Ramsey. He does have a reputation for being harsh. Thank you for the well wishes. The farmers market is amazing this time of year. Stay cool.

  9. I hope all works well with your new position.
I have been just reading the news and I can't tell you how much happier I am. It is nice to have no political pundits to tell me what to think

    1. Thank you!! I just can't listen to the news anymore. It is so political and people are so angry. I miss days when news reporters just stated the facts and not their opinions.

  10. My BIL's father was a life-long gardener and gravedigger and was a very compassionate man. Sometimes the ancient graves would collapse in leaving perhaps a skull exposed. He would pick it up, wrap it in a cloth and take it home until he could rebury it somewhere safer the next day. Probably wouldn't be allowed now but those were different times!

    1. That is a story. I'm sure there are laws now to prevent someone from doing the right things. This man also was such a sweet soul and takes great pride in his job. Such a refreshing thing to see.

  11. I wanted to make sure we all agreed to the 40 hours. If it is a job that is going to take 50 or more, I did not want it. I think we all take a bit longer learning what is really enough. I did too.

  12. That's a sweet story. We haven't been to our local farmers market in quite a few weeks.. need to rectify that.

  13. Good luck at the new position! I'm assuming you're scaling down to 40 hours a week, which is a great thing. Life is too short to spend most of it working.

    1. Thank you. No, I've always worked 40 hours. My position has been changed to a manager position and I wanted to make sure they understood if it will take more than 40 hours a week to do it, I wasn't interested. Yes, life is too short.

  16. Hope your work week is going well. I'm happy that you have such great support from the doctors. I love Aaron Sanchez! I started watching him when he competed for Iron Chef many years ago. I was rooting for him, but he, unfortunately, lost to Michael Symon (another great chef). I think I saw a little bit of his biography a long time ago. His mother was a well known chef & I think that was what influenced him to become a chef (I speak under correction, because it was so long ago).

The story about Allen is heartwarming. I hope you, the big guy & Binx enjoy the rest of the week!

    1. Yes, his mother basically introduced 'real' Mexican food to NY in the late 80's. On everything I have seen him on and now read, Aaron does seem like a really good guy and very talented in the kitchen.
The story about Allen just melted my heart.
Wishing you a great week as well.

  18. Wow, Lori! I imagine that a grave digger would have figured out a few things, in all those years. Many years ago when I was a court reporter, I used to report sometimes day-long meetings of various groups at the Columbia Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (LLR). I reported both the Accountants's board and the Undertakers' board, within a relatively short amount of time. Know who was the happiest, smiling, joking, brought in a big box of peaches and sacks for everyone to take some home, plus a huge cake for everyone to share? You got it: the undertakers! The money guys barely eked out a smile. I blogged about it! There is a lesson there. Your new profile picture is so pretty! I know you will be a great asset in your new position at work. Good for you, insisting that they honor the 40-hour work week! That is long enough to be at work. xoxo

    1. Hi Jenny!! Hope you're doing well and staying cool. I have noticed in my life that the 'money guys' do usually seem to be unhappy and jaded. That is a great story, I'll have to search out that post and read it. I totally agree, 40 hours a week is long enough to be at work each week.

  19. I bought a brand new dehydrator unopened in the box at a yard sale about 10 years ago for $15. I have yet to open it because I just don't know how to use it. I have to bite the bullet, read the instructions, and allow for a 5 minute probably learning curve. Hope it still works! I've got lots of mint, basil, and oregano. It's good to set your boundaries at work- hope that works out.I watched a silly movie on Netflix call 13 after the musical 13- I also got the message of how important it is to forgive and that everyone makes mistakes and deserves a 2nd chance.

    1. Judee, pull that out and start dehydrating those herbs. Once you read the instructions it's super easy. The book I read basically said if in doubt, dry more. It's basically impossible to over dry. For soft herbs, I usually do 4 hours at 140. Yes, boundaries and work/life balance are very important to me. Thanks for the recommendation, I will have to check out that movie on Netflix.

    1. It has gotten to the point that I really can't handle much of the news. I think this next year or so is going to be even worse. I try to just watch the local news which is a bit less jolting to the system.
