Other than regular meals and a few desserts, March was a relatively quiet month in my kitchen with no holidays or special occasions. April will be busy so I spent a lot of time reorganizing and cleaning to prepare for the garden season that will be here before we know it. My seed orders both arrived, and I've been planning out what needs planted where and when. I'm excited.
My kitchen soap dispenser broke. It was one that my sister-in-law bought me probably 20 years ago. I searched and searched for one that I liked and found this one at Target. I LOVE that it makes the liquid dawn come out as foam. I think we're using a lot less dish soap now plus it's good looking.
I had a number of apples that needed eaten so I decided pie would be perfect. Instead of making my normal apple pie recipe, I looked up a recipe in my Joy of Cooking book and tried it. It turned out delicious. I actually even remembered to pick up ice cream. Apple pie ala mode is a wonderful thing.
While picking up the vanilla ice cream for the pie I spotted this waffle cone swirl, and it is delicious. It is basically a really good version of a deconstructed Nestle Drumstick.
One of the doctors that I work for brought me back a bag of spicy peanuts from The Nut House in Chicago. The peanuts were not your typical small American peanuts but the size of an olive and VERY hard. I really wanted to try them but We both decided not to risk breaking a tooth so I honestly can't say how they taste but it was thoughtful of him to think of us.
So that is about the extent of happenings in my kitchen this month. I'm linking this post to sherrys pickings that hosts the In My Kitchen series. Be sure to visit her awesome blog and check out the many other links from around the world.
I love the look of that soap dispenser and the idea of it being foam. That is such a bummer about the peanuts. Maybe you could grind them to make a peanut butter? Although the spicy part might not be that good.
ReplyDeleteI really like the soap dispenser. It has been really saving on the amount of Dawn we use, especially the big guy. The spice blend on the peanuts is interesting so I'm still trying to figure out how I can use them.
DeleteI'd chop those peanuts and put them on ice cream to see what they taste like. I'm curious about them myself.
ReplyDeleteTillamook makes great ice cream. I'm always bringing home their little ice cream sandwiches, especially their strawberry ones.
This is the first time I've had their ice cream and it is good. I do buy their cheese from time to time. I can't decide how to use the nuts. It is hard to describe the spice blend on them.
DeleteOhhhh, seeds. Nice. I need to start mine this year. I passed all of last year.
ReplyDeleteThe soap that comes out foamy is fun!
Are you able to turn the nuts into peanut butter with a high-speed blender, food processor or Bullet-like device?
I'm excited to get things growing. It is such a great feeling to walk out back to pick herbs and veggies for a meal.
DeleteI’ve never seen Tillamook ice cream, though I love their cheese. Maybe it hasn’t reached our area of the country. I used to love “Drumsticks” so that flavor sounds delicious.
ReplyDeletebest…mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I'm in Southern Illinois so it may be getting close to your area Mae. It is really good. Have a great week!
DeleteI have one of those soap dispensers that turns the liquid into foam. I use it for my hand soap, have never thought to use it for the dishwashing liquid. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteMy husband does the bulk of the dish washing and he used WAY too much soap so it is really useful in our kitchen.
DeleteThat soap dispenser looks pretty with the blue dawn
ReplyDeleteI thought so too Ann.
DeleteI pretty much worked my entire life in international organizations (so working with all nationalities) and I think my favourite thing that one of my colleagues used to bring back from his home in Benin were the nuts!!! Oh my goodness, we just have no idea what real nuts taste like!
ReplyDeleteI also work with a wide variety of people from other countries and it is a huge perk to learn about so many different foods.
DeleteApple pie is Heaven, and your's looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteThanks Billie Jo.
DeleteI have apples that Joel sliced in the freezer and when I get home I am going to make a pie
ReplyDeletePie is always a delicious treat! Hugs to you Kim!
DeleteMaybe you can chop up the nuts and use them as a salad topped or something.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I was thinking. I'm going to experiment with them.
DeleteApple pie a la mode sounds so good right now! And that ice cream sounds delicious. Ice cream is one thing that I can't keep around very much! It calls to me from the freezer!
ReplyDeleteThe pie was delicious. I don't eat ice cream often but the waffle cone ice cream is really good. Now the big guy, it definitely calls him from the freezer so I understand. lol
DeleteI cannot think of a better way to deal with old apples. Clever!
ReplyDeleteIt was either pie or applesauce and pie won.
DeleteI get my seeds from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company as well. I think I got as excited looking at your pile of seeds as I did looking at mine when they arrived. For my free packet of seeds, I got red leaf Merlot lettuce. I’ve already planted it. I know it’s probably too soon, but I just couldn’t stand waiting.
ReplyDeleteI’ve seen Tillamook ice cream at the local supermarket, but I’ve never gotten it. I’ll have to pick some up the next time I’m there. You’ve convinced me.
I've always been happy with Baker Creek and Seed Savers. I think red leaf Merlot lettuce is one that I actually got also.
DeleteI actually picked up the Tillamook because it was on sale and I'm so glad I tried it. It is so creamy and delicious and that is coming from someone that doesn't eat a lot of ice cream. lol
hi Lori thanks for using my logo and thanks for joining in with IMK. Yes that soap dispenser is a looker :) I like foam too. I wonder why the nuts were so hard? Interesting...
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting Sherry! I am loving the foam dispenser. I don't know what type of peanut they are but they are the size of an olive.
DeleteLOVE foaming soap dispensers. They save so much soap.
ReplyDeleteThe waffle cone ice cream sound wonderful. I will keep my eyes open for that.
The big guy does the dishes often and I noticed he was using a lot more soap than he should so I thought it would be a good thing to have especially since mine broke. I found the ice cream on sale at Kroger and it was delicious!
DeleteI love the goings-on in your kitchen!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jeff!
DeleteOh there is something about apple pie... I love apples, the year before last I did a crazy apple project where for about 3 months I made a different apple recipe every week. Apple pie still took out the top favourite dish!
ReplyDeleteYou sound like me and my crazy food projects. You're right, apple pie is just the best!
DeleteI am not a big sweet person but that apple pie and ice cream had my mouth watering. I used to love drumsticks and will definitely look for that ice cream.
ReplyDeleteI always choose savory over sweet myself but do enjoy a good sweet treat every now and then.
DeleteThat soap dispenser IS very good looking and I think I would love the foam feature! I'll have to think about that; my dish soap is currently in one of those tall oil dispensers that make it come out super slow, hahaha! Not much chance of using too much; no one has that kind of time. Apple pie and ice cream? Yes please! And Tillamook ice cream is SO good! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThe big guy used so much soap the water would be blue with 5 inches of suds so this was a need more than a want. lol
DeleteEven though I'm not a big sweet eater, both the pie and the Tillamook were delicious. I enjoyed the Tillamook so much there is another carton hidden in the freezer.
